LIFE AT MIRROR HOUSE settled into a routine. George took to school like a duck to water and made friends easily. The teachers loved him because he asked questions and always turned in his homework on time. In fact, much of the time, he asked for more work. Walt had never seen a boy so hungry for an education. He rather forcefully informed George that he would put him through medical school and that there would be no arguments about it.

George had accepted the generous offer, but stated that it was a just a loan, which he’d pay back to Walt once he was earning a good income. Walt had grudgingly agreed, although he planned on evading George’s plans when the time came. He didn’t need the money. He just wanted to see the young man succeed and he would set him up in his own practice. He’d have to work on George about that, though.

Unlike her brother, Faith had a hard time adjusting to school and all of the new people. She was feisty and funny at home, but shy and withdrawn out in public, sticking close to one of her family members. Walt had quickly come to care for the girl and tried to bolster her self-confidence so that she wasn’t so scared when out and about.

Ellie also helped in that department, taking Faith shopping and along on other outings. Faith tried to get over her fear, but her upbringing was so ingrained in her that it was difficult. She hated being apart from Toby and George during school and had panic attacks a couple of times.

After the second one, Walt had enlisted Jin’s help, asking her to make friends with Faith, and to convince Susanna to do the same. He felt that if she had some friends her own age that she would become more self-sufficient and be happier.

Jin Cho was closer to twenty, but easily passed for seventeen. Her fun, outgoing personality was offset by her fighting skills and intolerance for disrespect towards any person. She enjoyed her new job as bodyguard to Susanna and Faith, even teaching them some basic self-defense moves. Faith and Susanna had no idea that Jin had been hired to protect them. They thought that she was a new girl at school, with whom they’d become friends.

The Korean woman also enjoyed the opportunity to learn since she’d dropped out of school when she’d been fourteen to help support her family by doing laundry and other labor. Being paid to go to school and to have fun with other girls was a far better job than she’d ever had.

With the young people mostly taken care of, Walt and Ellie were able to focus more on their rapidly approaching wedding. At first, Walt had been worried about going away on the honeymoon that they’d planned, but the Lone Wolf twins stepped up, offering to stay with the kids while they were away.

Reassured that the kids would be in good hands, Ellie and Walt kept their plans to go to San Diego, California.
